Art In A Gym? Hell Yeah!

Art In A Gym? Hell Yeah!

Last week (the first week of July), I headed up to Chin-Up Training in the Baker neighborhood of Denver to install my artwork as the featured artist of the quarter on the 983 side of their space. Right off of Ellsworth and Kalamath, this gym is a queer-, woman-owned space catering to queer- and woman-identifying folks. They offer gym space, personal training, and a variety of classes. On top of all of that, they maintain a body-neutral/body-positive stance within their gym - so refreshing and supportive to folks of all abilities and sizes.

I met Sarah there midday and felt instantly welcome - she provided me with a stepstool, hammer and nails, and gave me some general instructions about where I should hang my work, and then she left me to it. Leading up to the installation, I was feeling pretty nervous because I hadn’t visited the gym before (but you’d better believe I will be now!) and I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. Turns out – there was no reason for me to be nervous. I felt comfortable asking questions, hanging my work, and being left to my own devices in the space.

While I was hanging my work, several patrons and trainers moved in and out of the space, and each time, I felt welcome, un-judged, and supported. It’s a vibe I love, and one that can be hard to find sometimes.

Anyway - I brought most of my original works, including my “Fragile Masculinity” original painting, some piped paintings, and a whole new collection of brand-new work (which I’m currently calling my “Watercolor Splash Florals,” but I don’t love that title). I’m honored to be able to show my work in this community space - especially work that aligns closely with Chin-Up’s mission and vibe.

My work will be up there through September, and while I have mostly originals, there are also the last 2 prints of my “Fragile Masculinity” piece, plus other prints, cards, and stickers. It’s a grab-and-go setup, so if you see something you like, Venmo me (there’s a QR code there!), and then take it home with you.
